Grandpa & Coffee…

Grandpa and Coffee

Waking early, I went out at sunrise for some hunting and gathering.  A new recipe from Oaxaca for black refried beans really called to me!  Needing to make my own ancho chile powder, I headed out to find some ancho peppers.

Walking into the grocery store, with a Mexican bakery, I was instantly filled with the smell and delight of fresh baked breads and cookies!  OK, I needed ancho chile’s AND a Concha!

Fresh, soft, fragrant and flavorful!  Perfect!  It’s not unusual in Mexico to order a coffee and have a basket of breads set out on your table.  Typically, people dip them in coffee.

And that’s how I first learned about coffee while sitting in mystic  Grandpa’s lap!  They made stove top coffee in a pan of hot water, adding sugar and cream.  Then, he would dip a piece of white bread into that mixture and hold it up for me to eat.

Whether it was the lovely taste of or the love of my Grandfather, that experience was amazing.  This morning, I relived it minus Grandpa (but I did thank him!).
