Here’s the scoop on this day of travel. I left home at 4:30 am and arrived in Bacalar at 8:30 pm. Long but energizing day.
Lovely connection and conversation on the plane with Gina! Then met Nick and continued the connection. Flight arrived about 35 minutes early and we had a gate ready. Arrival time was 1:00. We landed around 12:25.
Through customs and immigration and a brief snag presented itself….the ATM machines weren’t working. I walked to the curb outside where the ADO ticket booth is and was on a but leaving the airport by 1:15. That’s the good news. Ticket price: $190 pesos ($10.21 US).
Because of increased security and spring break, it took two hours to get to Playa del Carmen rather than the normal hour plus.
The ADO bus had left but there was one at the other station. I “might” be able to connect by taking a taxi. I opted for Plan “B” and walked four blocks for the colectivo. One was loading, I got on and we left for Tulum immediately. Cost: $46 pesos ($2.48 US).
I felt like even with stops, I’d beat the bus to Tulum and could board there. Great visit with Gustavo from Veracruz on the way.
In Tulum, I had 20 minutes before the ADO bus departed. Not enough to go eat or get Gelato (scheduled are plus or minus so I opt to be there waiting). Cost: $238 pesos ( $12.80 US).
I did get money from ATM. Then sat with “Adise”, a new friend from Paris, talking the time away while we waited for the bus. It was nearly an hour late! Be flexible and patient. Then, be more patient!
I fell asleep and got a good 3o minute doze in. And once in Bacalar, I had a lovely walk to the hostel. Great after sitting all day!
It’s late now. Sitting here sipping my welcome gin and tonic and finishing up. Shower and bed waiting. I have room mates from Holland who are heading to Belize tomorrow.
And familiar faces from my last trip welcoming me as I arrived! Lovely!
When I wake tomorrow, this is what I’ll wake to.
