Pun Intended....new travel challenge!
I woke early, got ready and went to the hotel lobby to get breakfast. I had plenty of time until they told me the food service didn’t begin until 8:00…it was 7:15 and I needed to be leaving for the bus station at 8:00. I went back to my room, packed everything up, double checked the room and headed to the lobby. When I arrived, the desk staff told me that the restaurant was open for me. I was the only guest!
A lovely breakfast and I loaded up my pack, said good bye and started walking to the bus station. About 4o yards into my walk, something popped loudly in my foot. It had been sore. Now, it was nearly impossible to walk on it. And here I am so looking forward to waking everywhere!!
Everything happens for a reason. Be patient. Adjust and go forward slowly. In my case, really slowly!
It took a long time to reach the bus station and get to the correct gate. I took some Advil to interrupt the pain cycle and then, boarded the bus! It took a couple hours for the pain to settle down. Then, a most unusual thing happened! The bus stopped early and people started getting off. I asked the woman next to me if this was Guanajuato. She said yes. I grabbed my things, retrieved my backpack, walked through the station and boarded a waiting bus in front. Then, the luggage man came out and asked me if I was going to Guanajuato? Huh! They held the bus for me! Is Mexico safe…obviously for me it is.
My plans are adjusting. Now, I’m planning to explore in much smaller distances. I’ve developed a new walking pace…very slow short steps to relieve any pain. So weird feeling this way but at the same time being really grateful for being here and all the awesome people I’ve met. Adjust! Adjust again! Be patient. Flex some more! Make the most of it!
Saturday Night in Guanajuato
I went up to rest on the upper floor, found a hammock chair and massaged my leg. Then, music broke out! It is Saturday night in Guanajuato! Music everywhere, this one was from a bridal party!
Refreshed, I went to immerse myself in the local area. Mercado Hidalgo was more quiet and less intense. The street food scene wasn’t in full force but the sidewalks were packed. Plaza San Fernando was very busy. A couple other plazas with water fountains were very peaceful and quiet. Then, I walked past a Pollo al Pastor Asada restaurant and had to go in. Perfect proportions, tasty chicken with pineapple, fresh tortillas, Mexican rice, refried beans…lovely. Interesting that this meal costs me 83 pesos but a soda at the bus station cost me 50 pesos. There’s the price and cost disparity I’ve mentioned before.
After that, I wandered in the general direction of the theater where it is always crowded. I sat there taking photo’s, met a few people, had a lovely conversation with Judith who is studying English and since I’m studying Spanish, we helped each other!
Oh, I might have just forgotten to mention I stopped and visited a bakery on the way. Mexican treats can be so light, flaky and low sugar! Can’t miss that…medicine for my foot/ankle!!
Below….a few photo’s of my evening wandering!
