The name simply has a nice ring to it, Cuernavaca! Sounds old, authentic and somehow real Mexico. When the bus arrived, we really hadn’t. Cuernavaca has been the victim of urban sprawl and it was a long way from the edge of Cuernavaca to Cuernavaca!
With the sprawl, I had read that the city had changed. Now, it’s popular for weekend get-aways for people from Mexico City since it is close and cooler.
It was a long ride through the burbs to the bus “termina”…the end. Once there, I found myself in a dusty and noisy bus lot. Following directions, I walked along a busy highway for a couple hundred meters to get to a sidewalk and head toward the Zocolo.
Already, I wasn’t feeling thrilled with being here. Lots of traffic. Lots of hills. Not much moving about this early. It was a little after 9:00 am.
Continuing straight, the Zocolo began to appear evident by trees and then, the colorful sign for Cuernavaca. I glanced to my left where finally, I saw people sitting at a restaurant eating! Then, I noticed the name: Cafe Colibri. Cafe Hummingbird!
How many times in my life have hummingbirds shown up in one form or another?! They always feel like a messenger!
After breakfast, I spent a couple hours exploring and looking around. Two words describe Cuernavaca now compared to the old cultural center it once was: Starbucks and Krispy Kreme! You get the idea..
It had an interesting downtown area with cafe’s, panaderia’s, shops and such. The cathedral was undergoing renovation so I was unable to see that. And toward the end of my walk, I found a local market off the corner of the Zocolo. That was cool!
Threading my way back to the bus station, I found myself at a busy intersection with multiple roads and no apparent way to get across. Very patiently, I took one section at a time until a lone car stopped and motioned me across to the sidewalk. Whew! Safe! Cuidado!
The bus came back to Tepoztlan to a different stop. I had seen it on the way out so knew which direction to walk. Out of the parking lot, onto the sidewalk and I glanced to my left. I saw a sign for this hotel:
I decided to go back for another massage. My leg was better but had room for improvement. Manuel knows energy and really moved it around. Yes, one of the best massages of my life!! It felt like I was letting go of really old energy that had become stuck in an old pattern. Today, while my leg stills bothers a bit, my body feels different.
This morning, I walked out for coffee and realized it is a market day here! Lots of stalls setting up and lining the sides of the road! It’s so interesting watching a village transform for market day. Roads close, stalls get set up on both sides of the road and all sort of vendors come out with their ware.
Found good food near the market and then had lunch at a place recommended for one of the best hamburgers in Mexico. The recommendation is accurate!
More shots of the street crowd growing and some of the vendors. First photo’s are of an excellent coffee shop with a four bean blend. Awesome people there as well! Had a great conversation with a woman from New Mexico and her father from upstate New York.
Early morning watching colors change with the sunrise.
Tomorrow, I head back to Mexico City. I’ll have a couple of days there before flying home. Flying home?! That has a strange feel to it? I feel like I am at home wherever I’m staying so being at my “home” will certainly be different!
Ciao!
Lower you were so open I feel like I was looking at what you saw. Thank you for that. I also enjoyed a wonderful day and safely cross the street. Love you I’m so glad you’re having a wonderful time
Thanks! Thanks for riding along with me!
