Hello from Bali's East Coast: Candidasa!
I left Ubud yesterday morning for Candidasa. My Grab driver was there in a couple minutes after I booked. That’s not always the case. In some countries, I have waited close to 30 minutes and had several drivers cancel before someone finally arrives! And, my driver was excellent! Smooth. Cautious. Courteous! I didn’t experience any “driver” stress on the way. That is also somewhat of a rarity. Some drivers cut in and out of tight spaces, jerk here and there, seem to be racing to set a record to a destination. This driver had none of that! Such a peaceful and enjoyable drive. I got so see the countryside!
Sagara Candidasa....my hotel on the ocean.
The drive was just under 2 hours getting here. It was early and well before check-in time. The staff was very helpful and a little confused. I stored my backpack with them and went to the restaurant. They were going to come get me when my room was ready…or so I thought. Finished with a light lunch, I walked up front to store my other computer backpack. They handed me a key and told me my room was ready! Perfect. It is a lovely room!!
I went on a walking mission to explore and have a look around! I found a path to the beach. Then I stopped at a couple Spa’s. I wanted to get some bath salts for my large bath tub. They didn’t have any but suggested I get some Bali Salt which is a natural salt from here. I found a small amount in Ubud but wanted more for a bath. I was directd to the main groery not far away. I stopped in multiple places along the way…nobody had any.
At the Gemini Market, it doesn’t appear they are very accustomed to foreigners coming in. I practice speaking slowly and with very few words when I am in a foreign country. In spite of that, I watch their body language, they seem to freeze and tighten up when I talk to them. Patiently, I repeat in fewer or different words. Unfrozen, they gave me a distinct no and they didn’t have any idea where I could find any. OK….I can deal with that.
I walked across the street and noticed I had walked up to the Casa Coffee! I walked in to look around. They offered me coffee but I didn’t want any! I walked through and out into the back yard beyond. A woman came out and said hello. She asked me some questions about my visit.
For some reason, I felt inspired to ask here if she knew where I could find Bali Salt. She thought for a moment and then pointed North up the street and suggested the local market. I asked if it was walking or motorbike. She said motorbike. I mentioned having sore knees and not walking that far.
She left me heading into the kitchen, asking staff, and finding a bag of salt she recently bought. She came out to show me what they sold. She then offered to go to the market in the morning and buy me some. I didn’t want a huge bag so put mi fingers around hers indicating how much I wanted. Surprised, she offered to give me that and would not take money for it. I wanted to soak my body in a salty bath after all the walking and healing work I have received!
Then she told me she is a traditional Balinese healer. She took my hand and demonstrated how she worked. Her work actually helps the blood which is something Wayan helped me with and told me I needed.
Not knowing the correct spelling, her name sounds like Pa Puta and I asked if she would work on me? She suggested early in the morning. She doesn’t have a “massage” business, no advertising or sign. She only works with people she is inspired and drawn to help! How fortunate for me.
After she worked on me this morning, I went back later for a coffee. She sat and talked with me for a while. They have yoga classes there three times a week. And she showed me a path through their beautiful property I can use to get to a better beach! I’m going there in the morning during low tide. High tide was really rough on me.
And that’s how my day started!!
Live travel videos I posted on Facebook.
I know many people are not on Facebook. I downloaded a couple videos I made after arriving here. One was my first evening as I was waiting pizza at Ciao Pizza!
The other was this morning capturing some warmth and sounds of the ocean for my friends at home!
