Going against the current, the boat still moved at a fast clip! The river narrowed, we got into original forest, and saw a lot of birds along the way. Very cool ride!! Thanks to Han Tours!
I left Kuala Lumpur on a shuttle that took care of all connections. Doing this on my own was complicated given my limited time here. The shuttle met, picked up three of us and we were off! It stopped at the jetty. The bus people went on but we waited for 1 1/2 hours for others to arrive. Then, we set off in the rain! Even in the rain, it was an awesome boat ride. The three hours went by in a flash!
Kuala Tahan Village
At the jetty, the water was rising. It was a steep walk up the hill to the village. My hostel was close. I picked it because it sounded more social. Maybe it can be but not when I was the only guest. Nice location. Comfortable room. Good view! It was near everything and had umbrellas for guests to use!
It rained heavy through the night. The river rose substantially! When the rain let up, I crossed to the park, got my pass and went to the restaurant there for some breakfast. However, they stop serving at 10:00 am. I asked if they had coffee which they did. I got some and sat down. One man serving the restaurant brought me a plate a fruit. A short time later, he brought a plate of toast for me. They wouldn’t accept any money for it.
I bundled up and headed out to walk in the forest and get to Tahan Hide to sit, listen and watch. As I climbed the final steps, I saw a person sitting there with their head down. It was Luuk, the man in my lead photo here. I sat there for several hours watching. Whenever the rain diminished, the birds started singing. Then stopped with heavy rain. Pretty cool experience!
Rainy day, flooded roads
True to form, different opinions floated about. Some said the road was closed and no one could leave. Others said there was a way. I learned that my company made arrangements for a boat to shuttle people across the flooded road. I booked an early departure for the next day so I’d have adequate time to prepare for my Bali flight.
The next morning, everything flowed. I packed up after making some videos and walked into the village. A few meters down the road, a restaurant that had always been closed was open for breakfast. Perfect!
I walked on and met some people participating in the bird could. Two ladies from Italy and Amir. Joined later by Anna. Then, ti was time to leave!
