The beginning: inspired to travel!
I began traveling in 1973 when I left NW Kansas and drove to Kentucky for college. I found country, hills, streams, foods, and accents I had never experienced before. Being on the track team and attending professional conferences, I traveled to many interesting places. I experienced Memphis, Knoxville, Biloxi, Savannah, Atlanta, Niagra Falls, Thomas Jefferson’s home, and many other places. That started my travel desire!
It inspired me to want to see more! I began, learning to backpack in the Smokies, learning and teaching mountaineering skills in the Tetons and Wind River Mountains of Wyoming, seeing the Arizona desert after a spring rain, and experiencing the Western Navajo Fair in Tuba City. Eventually, I studied with Native American shaman to help people connect with nature and went through a Vision Quest. I loved teaching but felt stifled by politics so I resigned from a tenure-track teaching position to travel and learn.
I was going to cycle Europe but realized I hadn’t seen my own country. All non-essentials went into storage and I headed off in my Subaru to explore. Two intentions guided me. First, Socrates: “Wherever you go, there you are”! I didn’t want to take my old challenges with me, didn’t want to be “running” away from something. Thus, I focused clearly on what I was moving toward, on what I wanted to learn. “Who do I want to be when I’m at my best?”…that guided me. Second, I was intent on learning to teach my students how to learn. They were great at memorizing which is of limited use. So, I looked for people and organizations I could interview to learn more about helping people learn how to learn!
And that certainly shifted my life!
Old post, earlier adventures
I thought I could contain all those experiences here but that’s not possible. Rather than let those experiences vanish, I’m creating a way here for you to access past stories if you are interested. My first trip to Thailand was around 2003…lots has changed. My stories relate my personal experiences, insights and reflections. So here, I’m creating a spot where you can find that access.
And if you have any questions come up about places I’ve traveled or insights I’ve gained or anything else, please let me know!

This is the third time I’ve written this post. Two have vanished and the last one to do so was completely finished. If you are reading this, I had better luck this time! Once the second bus arrived, I got on and rode about 10 minutes to a village where
Travel Packing Checklist
The ever evolving travel packing checklist. My first extended trip was in the mid-80’s where I traveled across the US for roughly 15 months. I had my car and loaded it with essentials: books, camping gear, bicycle, camera and clothing. I had more than I needed and didn’t have some
Chihuahua…beginning
Hello! I returned home September 1 from two weeks in Chihuahua. I had a wonderful trip! Everything flowed smoothly for me. Before leaving, I had several people tell me how dangerous it was in Chihuahua. I never experienced anything but helpful people including taxi drivers. The first afternoon, I went

They found WHAT in a suitcase?
I always get advice from fellow travelers about what I can bring back in my luggage. I realizing that custom regulations are very stringent in some parts of the world like for Australians where the soil on people’s shoes is reportedly checked and shoes can be confiscated (so I’ve been
Living to die or dying to live? The adventure….
http://youtu.be/sKTjSj_9dVc?t=3s When I stop and consider all the things in my life I love, travel rises toward the top of the list. There are many reasons for this and chief among them is that I feel so alive when traveling. Everything is new. There are no routines. Being present fully
