Guanajuato, San Miguel And Queretaro Travel
Traveling in the Baja in the mid-1980s, I met a man who owned a trucking company in Mexicali. He took his wife and daughter traveling all over the world! I asked him what his favorite place was. Instantly, he said “Guanajuato”! I had to look it up. Then, I dreamt for years about someday going there! A friend went around 2010, loved it, and shared some of her experiences. Finally, I was about to go! Now, I’ve been there a couple of times. It’s a walking town. I had my first ever pink sweet tamale! It was amazing! The food tour I took was great. The market food and the people serving it were great. Yes, I love Guanajuato!
The last time I was in Guanajuato, I stayed in different parts of the city to discover more. Be prepared for lots of up-and-down walking! It’s worth it!
The areas here are generally NW of Mexico City. I fly to Mexico City, travel by bus, and head that direction to see Queretaro, San Miguel de Allende and Guanajuato. Ther are other areas I want to see but these are the primary ones I’ve been to so, here you go!
Guanajuato
Such a colorful town! I was told in San Miguel de Allende that houses are restricted to certain colors. You can see here clearly that is not true in Guanajuato! Wow!
Cobblestone streets. Friendly people are happy to practice their English. Great street food. Markets. Parks to hike in. The mummy museum. El Teatro Juárez! Underground roads in old mining tunnels. So many things to enjoy.
Here, especially, with the cobblestone streets some with no traffic, I savor walking slowly. I’ll pick a spot, sit watch people wander by and take photo’s. On the side of the street, in the Plaza de San Fernando or on top of the hill at Monumento al Pipilar!
It has an authentic Mexican town feel to it which I love!

Walking slow, Travel Magic!
Slow moving, lots of sitting evening! Foot a bit sore today. Had plans, dropped those, adjusted! Needed to get to the bank for some money. First time I’ve ever experienced this!! ATM ate my card, no way to recover it, had to order a new one. Minimum, with customs, of
New travel twist!
Pun Intended….new travel challenge! I woke early, got ready and went to the hotel lobby to get breakfast. I had plenty of time until they told me the food service didn’t begin until 8:00…it was 7:15 and I needed to be leaving for the bus station at 8:00. I went
Guanajuato! Awesome people! Lots of color, great food & coffee, perfect climate and “Life”!
What a great weekend in Guanajuato! There are a lot of tourist here but they are mostly Mexican. People are friendly. There is a lot going on. Lovely food everywhere. Easy walking wherever I want to go. Comfortable large bed. Hot water for shower. And really good coffee. What more
Authentic Travel…a little glimpse!
Going slow. Experience authentic communities. Be present. Savor. No long overnight bus rides this time. Seeing new places. Visiting old friends. Meeting new friends. And revisiting some favorite spots from last time. First, I’ll explore some new areas North of Mexico City. Starting in some new places. Seeing old
San Miguel de Allende
I had mixed feelings about visiting San Miguel de Allende. A friend lived there years ago and loved it. Another friend visited, hated it, and left immediately. It didn’t feel like Mexico to her. I went to have my own experience. I heard more English than anywhere else I’ve visited in Mexico! A lot of ex-pats live there coming from around the world. And with a booming Mexican economy, wealthy Mexicans are buying vacation homes there. Prices are higher, there are more upscale restaurants that provide a wider range of dining options and budget lodging is hard to come by! I can still find awesome market or street food as well as local breafast cafe’s. It’s not my favorite spot in Mexico but I do love visiting! Several friends live there now so it’s fun to see them again when I visit. And don’t miss La Gruta Hot Springs! So nice but go early before the crows!
Travels to San Miguel de Allende
San Miguel de Allende
Good Timing in San Miguel de Allende I enjoy San Miguel de Allende very much. As many people I meet that tell me it’s the best place in the world to live, I’ve never felt that draw. But it is a really special place to visit! So many things to
San Miguel and simple pleasures
Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel Travel Transition I’ve moved on from Guanajuato to San Miguel de Allende. The energy here is very different for me. More upscale, lots of English spoken, some tourist ignore me, all the locals smile and say hello when I do. There are places to go
Serendipity and Nature while traveling!
Right place, right tine and magic happens. Travel is full of unpredictable experiences! For example, until you visit the Museo Nacional de Anthropologia in Mexico City, you have NO idea how overwhelming it can be! So you have to adjust! And often that comes in the experience itself! Similarly, travel
San Miguel de Allende Travel day: La Gruta Hot Springs!
Listening! So important in every moment of life. I had at least three or four people tell me about La Gruta and that I should visit there. Advice was different from each but, I listened, went early and had a lovely morning soaking in the hot springs! There is a
Bon Voyage San Miguel de Allende!
Short story as I’m packing, it’s late and I leave in the morning. Absolutely stunning morning here! Perfect! Not hot and not cold. No wind. Not raining! And very few people at the hot springs when I arrived. Travel options There have been times when I have had to follow
First evening without rain in San Miguel de Allende!
I walked…and walked….and walked some more today! Left around 10:00, had breakfast with Barbara and Thelma then walked to the top of Parque El Chorro. Lots of steps up and up! Started my day at Ki’bok coffee! Photo below. Anyone care to join me??? Back at 5:00, then an evening
Travel to Queretaro
Queretaro was a revelation for me! I was heading to Guanajuato for the first time. There was not a direct bus to either San Miguel de Allende or Guanajuato. They transferred in Queretaro. I decided to spend a couple of nights here before going on. I was completely caught by surprise and a sense of wonder in the historical part of town where I stayed! There are something like 1,400 historical monuments or locations in the historic district! WOW!
I found great coffee, and great plazas, overdosed on historic monuments, savored food at the market, made new friends and thoroughly enjoyed my experience. I’ll be back! I discovered that if I came back here before heading to Puebla, there was a first-class bus direct that bypassed Mexico City! As good fortune would have it, not only was it a comfortable first-class servic, there were only two passengers on the top deck! Man, the lap of luxury and comfort!
Travel to Queretaro
Evening walking Queretaro
Surprise around the corner. My final evening in Queretaro, I headed out wandering with my camera. I did find the church where the thorns grow in the shape of the cross but the courtyard was closed. My plan, turn left and walk! There was one area I hadn’t explored much.
Surprising coffee here in Queretaro!
A quick search for coffee showed a spot near my hostel. It was late, too late for coffee, so I stopped so I would know where it was in the morning. That morning was yesterday and my experience was exceptional! Alejandro explained the different coffees they had, which was best
Amazing historic area in Queretaro!
I’ve been very impressed with this city! I’m staying in the historic central area so outside areas are probably very different. The central area is cobble stone streets, polite and courteous drivers, walking everywhere, huge range of food and dining options and very friendly people. Hours walking yesterday! For roughly
Exploring day in Queretaro!
Short walk yesterday turned long! So much to see here. Pedestrian streets set up for vendors last night. Amazing variety! Food and architecture and everything in between. There is so much variety here! Hamburgers, sushi, pizza, bakery, coffee, chapulines (grasshoppers) and more. Original architecture, Spanish architecture and so many
My final travel day in Mexico! Great experience!
Actually, I have tomorrow but it is moving day so that’s different. I have an early flight Thursday and with traffic, I’m moving closer to the airport for one night. That will give me a new neighborhood to explore as well. Today, I made it to Teotihuacan. I took the
Not a city boy!
UPDATE…now, with actual photo’s rather than blank spaces. Really slow wifi last night kept disconnecting! The photo above is from a weeknight when the street is actually really quiet! Interesting, yes! Pricey, yes! Not my favorite place to be. I don’t much like big cities, preferring the more intimate connections
