A Walk About With Larry

Sumatra Travel Adventures

Wild Orangutan, Sumatra

Before leaving on a trip over a decade ago, I read about the “original” guide into the forest near Ketambe, Sumatra.  Inspired, I decided to go there!  I found Wisma Cinta Alam homestay and the son of the original guide.  It was an adventure getting there and then going into the forest with him!
We did see wild Orangutan, listened to a clouded leopard hunt, briefly spotted a white-handed gibbon, plenty of leeches, lots of birds and a great campsite.
I went to some other spots including Lake Toba and Bukit Lawang.
I’m headed back there soon and will post new stories here and am looking forward to exploring new places this time!
What you see posted now are previous experiences.  They will change as I travel there this time.

My first travel adventure into Sumatra

Surfacing in Sumatra jungle

Listening to the birds and laughing children from my perch in Lek Jon Cottages looking out of the lake. Mountains ring the mainland on the other side of the water and clouds linger. Smoky and ethereal, morning and evening mist wafts through the trees. Yes, it is very peaceful here!

More Live…now on Sumatra

The day continues with a twist. I spent quite a bit of time writing a continuation of my earlier post. Something happened, the autosave apparently didn’t save so now I’m starting over. After the last post, I heard a flight announcement and headed toward Gate 5, down the stairs and

Live from the road to Sumatra

This morning at 6:00 to a dark and quiet hostel. Showered, packed and ready before 7:00, I waited to see what would unfold. Last night I was told I needed to leave at 7:00 to make my 9:50 flight. That was before I was told I needed to leave at
